Article: Golden oranges for Israel Independence Day
Golden oranges for Israel Independence Day
In honor of Israel's Independence Day today, I would like to share a piece of jewelry I designed two years ago for a jewelry exhibition marking the 70th anniversary of the State of Israel.
The instructions for the exhibition were to design a pendant that could also be used as a brooch. I debated between several elements.
At the end of the day, I chose an element that eventually became a commercial brand and a cultural icon: the orange.
The orange is a symbol of Israel, and it is a reminder of the country's agricultural history. In the early days of the State of Israel, oranges were one of the country's main exports. The orange groves were a source of pride for the Israeli people, and they came to represent the country's resilience and determination.
"The Oranges" is a famous Israeli folk song celebrating the orange. The song's lyrics compare the orange to gold, expressing the hope that the orange will bring prosperity to Israel.
I was looking for a simple, clear, and nostalgic message that would resonate with everyone, and that's how I stumbled upon oranges in a crate. Ultimately, it was also meant to sit well with the human body. I gathered sources of inspiration and pictures related to the subject: oranges, orange crates, orange pickers, and so on.
And along the way, I also (how could I not) developed a longing for the beautiful and promising land of Israel...
And, of course, the stage of sketches and drafts.
And thus, a pendant/Brooch was born.
A 925 silver pendant embossed with 925 silver balls coated in 24-karat gold, with ruby and emerald stones inlaid. Comes with a 925 silver embossed chain.
